As a little girl, I used to be afraid of everything around me. As I got older, I began to question why. My fear of the dark and unknown soon became a sense of curiosity about it, which I find reflected in my art. I like mythology from around the world that involves monsters. I find that what we fear the most deeply reflects on our cultures and societies, specifically, what we hold value in and don’t.
For me, creating a character is much more than just looking at their size, gender, or skin color. It’s analyzing who they are, where they came from, and how I can make it so the viewer can understand them just by their design. For me, it is taking into account things like their environment, how they would move through it, how their clothes would act, what tools they have, and how they would use them. To me, these details help give my work a life of its own.
