(2021) By: Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Charcoal Dimension: 18x24in In this piece, lines create movement that travels up and down the tree, while the use of values help create depth in the image. The light coming through the branches highlights the curves of the women's face, body, and arms giving her more of a three-dimensional shape in the picture. The Pacific Northwest myth of Dzunukwa was the inspiration for this character. Masks of her image often have her portrayed with wild hair, exposed breasts, and a puckered mouth. To keep with these ideas in her design (while giving her a more modern look), I gave her long flowing hair, big full lips, and a top with a large cut-out exposing a large portion of her chest. The shapes on her cheeks are simplified versions of ovoids (found in Pacific Northwest coastal art), connecting her to the original mask's designs.
(2022) By Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Dimension: 14x18in The first half of the painting uses a monochromatic greyscale and a realistic approach to value and shading. While the second follows a triadic color scheme with a value scale simplified with minimal use of half tones. As a result, this self-portrait's use of contrast creates variety and unity in the overall composition of the painting.
(2021) By: Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Charcoal Dimension: 18x24in Long car rides home through the dense evergreen forests often made me wonder what lurked through the trees. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I often heard tales of Sasquatch, and I had wondered why we never saw this creature. This helped with ideas for the designing process. For this interpretation of Sasquatch, I gave him an owl mask, talon-like fingers, and a mossy shawl similar to that of hanging moss common in Washington State, for when he peers through trees, we would be unable to detect him. However, I tried to make the pose reminiscent of the 1967 bigfoot video. A multi-point linear perspective created depth in the piece, which was essential for capturing the creature's size compared to its surroundings. The dramatic contrast between the black and white values gives the image a tense atmosphere as the light from the street lamp illuminates the figure below. The sharp contrast also helped highlight some of the more minor details of this image. Examples are the moths near the light bulb of the street lamp and the bumps and ridges across the creature's fingers. It is the

(2022) By Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Dimension: 16x20in The use of values creates silky sweeping motions of light and shadow across the canvas, highlighting the creases and folds of the purple fabric. A split-complementary color scheme draws attention to the objects in the center of the picture plane, while the sharp wild textures of the plant, smooth delicateness of the grapes, and boxy shape of the chair give an excellent variety of lines, shapes, and textures. The elements used make this painting one of the more beautiful to view.
(2022)By: Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Ink and Charcoal Dimension: 18x24in In this mixed media drawing, the woman's arched back functions as an implied line, guiding the viewer toward the reflection in the mirror. High contrast draws attention to the face, while the low contrast helps conceal the gruesome visage in the shower. The white patterned tiles that line the walls and floor make the room feel neat, organized, and clean, which causes the viewer to notice the spots of red more clearly and creates this feeling of disturbance, hinting at the dark intent of the character.
(2019) By: Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Watercolor and Acrylic Dimension: 8x8in As the name implies, this smaller painting is based on the famous Irish folk song Molly Malone about a fishmonger's daughter. Following a vibrant triad color scheme, this piece is full of patterns and motions that constantly have the viewer moving through the piece. Her lifeless stare seems to burn through the viewer, which, like the song's lyrics, causes one to feel uneasy.
(2022) By Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Dimension: 14x18in The analogous color scheme uses cooler hues which contrast with the warmer hues creating a balance throughout the painting. The style of Cubism influenced this piece. Thus, heavy contrast used in the background and on wooden figures gives the piece depth. However, what makes this painting stand out beautifully is the cascade of lines, and patterns that move down through the picture plane, held gently by the wooden figure and the hand.

(2020)By: Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Colored Pencils Dimension: 18x24in As a woman, I feel as though the expectations of our lives are stacked hazardously on top of each other, in a fragile state of contradictions. These women represent this metaphorical stacking of representation by the position their heads are from each other. The skin textures, shapes, and patterns represent the double standards placed on women's appearances. Changing patterns, color, and shape are often viewed as beautiful when found in but viewed poorly on women's bodies (even though both are natural). Their earthy skin tones also contrast with the high saturated colors of the background, which causes the viewer's eye to be drawn more toward the women in the center.
(2022) By Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Acrylic on canvas Dimension: 20x16in The monochromatic color scheme helps lay down the basic forms that make up the mask, while chiaroscuro emphasizes the dramatic shifts in value. This sharp change in value creates an implied line that runs through the center of the face and brings attention to the subtler changes in mid-tones (especially notable in the lips). The painting follows the rule of thirds, where there is this transition between the darkest part (far left) to the lightest part (far right) of the picture plane. Using the rule of thirds brings unity and balance to the painting's overall composition.

(2021) By Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Acrylic on Wood Dimension: 11x13in This painting was inspired by David Lynch’s show Twin Peaks and is my interpretation of Laura Palmer’s body when discovered washed up on the beach. The painting was done in a monochromatic blue color scheme so that her body appeared cold to the touch with eyes sunken in and wide open as most dead bodies naturally seem to be. Because her body was found near water, I used pointillism to create textured algae on her face to show her prolonged exposure to the elements. The log (which functioned for a canvas) helps create a nice contrast in values against the primarily blue color scheme and ties back to the show as it takes place near a logging mill. Together all these elements bring life to the hauntingly dead portrait of Laura Palmer.
(2021) By: Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Charcoal Dimension: 18x24in The sfumato style shading done makes the piece appear soft and light. The use of lines on the hat, sweater, and backpack strap creates this pattern of verticle motion that forms a sense of harmony throughout the drawing but causes the figure to appear taller. An implied line is made by the figure being slightly off-center and their eyes looking towards something in the distance. The eyes and body are going left, balanced by the smoky negative space surrounding the form, coming from the right.

Mark-making techniques such as cross-hatching and pointillism helped create texture in the piece. I used a sharp chiaroscuro contrast to accomplish the feeling of severe heat. This value technique helped mimic how the sun would cast down harsh shadows at the highest point of the day.
(2021) By Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Colored Pencil on Black Paper Dimension: 12x9in The high saturated hues of the snake against the black background creates a balance between the positive and negative space in the drawing. The snake's scales form a repetitive movement across its face, while contrast in colors (warm and cool) helps create an implied line that leads the viewer into the snake's intense gaze.
(2020) By Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Watercolor and Acrylic on paper Dimension: 14x11in Inspired by: Fiorentino Rosso Fiorentino’s Baroque painting, Cherub Playing a Lute, helped to inspire this piece. Drawn to the cherub’s facial expression and how it appeared enraptured by the instrument, I decided to recreate this piece using my drawing style. The cherub’s gaze creates this implied line that follows up the bridge of the lute towards their fingers, and the negative space in the background causes the viewer to focus more on what the cherub is doing. Dry brush strokes on the lute give the piece texture.

(2019) By: Caitlyn Reardon Medium: Charcoal Dimension: 24x18in This piece relied on subtractive drawing to bring out the skull's lighter values and enhance the composition of the piece. Chiaroscuro and sfumato techniques also improved the skull's overall sense of depth and volume. The wallpaper's pattern forms a steady repetition through the picture plane, while the position of the skull in the center shows that it is to be the main focus.
